Hello

The question is - what do we do with the thousands of digital images we produce?   Our answer is to develop a website.  Now we have a purpose and a destination for our photography.

We began photography as a more serious hobby on retirement in 2016, changing from point and shoot to more technically and creatively designed images.  Photographing together is a great way to spend retirement hours, seeking destinations and sharing our learning, both in photographing and in post-processing.

      Neil's Story

When I graduated from a small-town high school in northwest Saskatchewan, I longed for more than farm life experience. First year Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan was a big culture shock. But four years later I graduated with an Engineering degree in Geology/Geophysics and an offer for employment in Calgary. Along the way my cousin introduced me to one of her Nursing friends (a farm girl from northeast Saskatchewan). By the time I retired, I had spent forty-eight years with six companies plus ten years consulting in the oil patch exploring for oil and gas.

My life has been driven by family, science, logic and personal sports. But since Gayle received a digital camera when she retired, I have been struggling with new concepts. My logical mind tells me if I take enough images, I will have one or two gems in the shoot. But photo “creators” suggest “walk around, feel the scene, compose and shoot an excellent image”. It’s like visualization in sports. I’m working on it but like sports, it’s a learning experience.

      Exploring Possibilities in Photography

      Gayle's Story

I grew up on a farm in northeast Saskatchewan and left home at 17 to go to University in Saskatoon.  Neil and I married young and have lived in Calgary for most of our married lives.  We have two wonderful married daughters and six grandchildren who all live close by.  I worked as a Registered Nurse in public health, management, and education, retiring from an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Calgary in 2016.

I am a lifelong learner and it continues into my study of photography.   I have purchased too many series of photographic teachings to count and cannot keep up with everything that I have bought - it seems to be an obsession that I might miss something!  What I have found is that, with photography, the learning will never end, and that suits my style very well.

I am interested in a wide range of photographic genres, with a strong focus on nature.   My artist statement is:  "As an evolving photographer, I am striving to develop my creativity in a way that will identify my unique style or brand focused on my keen interest in nature, both close-up and far away."
